Parotitis Mumps
There have been seven persons in Northeast Nebraska who have developed parotitis within the past five days. They all attended a high school alumni basketball tournament in Columbus on March 26th and 27th 2010. Many of the participants/attendees also visited a bar in Columbus afterwards. We know one person so far is IgM+ for mumps. Test results are pending for some of the other patients.
The incubation period: 14 – 25 days with around 18 days as average The main communicability is 3 days before to 4 days after onset of parotitis. We would recommend isolating persons for 5 days after onset (date of onset = day zero plus 4 days).
This memo is being sent out to alert the physicians in the area of a possible outbreak. If you have any suspected cases please contact our office. The testing information that will be used is from the outbreak in 2006.
Please note: State is not recommending the urine culture as they did not find it to be valuable. In the event you should need to contact us after hours, please call Director Shannon Vanderheiden at (308)520-0158 or Cindy Glos Disease Surveillance Coordinator at (308)520-5410.
Thank You,
